Chiesa del Santo Volto
Chiesa del Santo Volto rises on the site of former steelworks, where seven vertical towers gather around one central volume. Mario Botta designed the sanctuary between 2001 and 2004, and construction followed from 2004 to 2006.
The central plan has no traditional main façade, so the building forms a recognisable image from many viewpoints. Indirect daylight slips between the towers, while terracotta brick and red Verona stone shape the exterior. Inside, maple wood lines the ceiling, pale stone covers the floor, and a wide roof structure leaves the space free of supporting columns. Behind the altar, a pixelated image of the Holy Shroud remains visible across the nave.
The old factory chimney still rises beside the church, wrapped in a spiral steel coil and topped with a cross that glows at night.
