Museo Civico di Tivoli

Museo Civico di Tivoli stands in the historic centre of Tivoli, Italy, inside the former Casa della Missione of San Vincenzo de’ Paoli. Its walls reach back to the fourteenth century. The building began as a hospital for sick people, the poor and pilgrims, managed by the Confraternity of the Annunziata. In 1729, the Annunziata confraternity was dissolved.

Missionaries of San Vincenzo de’ Paoli then rebuilt the church and established their mission house here. Father Bernardo Della Torre designed the church. The complex took much of its present form during the early eighteenth century, while the church retained its original design. Napoleonic secularisation also touched the complex.

Garibaldi troops occupied the building in 1867, and post-unification Italy gave it several new uses. One later role was a juvenile reformatory. The museum now presents Tivoli’s historical, artistic and archaeological treasures through exhibitions and cultural events. The church still preserves the form created in the early eighteenth century.
