Προτομή Γεώργιου Τσόντου

The Προτομή Γεώργιου Τσόντου stands in the small square of Amoudari among other memorials. The bust names Giorgos Tsondos and his wartime nickname, Kapetan Vardas.

He lived from 1871 to 1941, linking local resistance, military service, and public office across modern Greek history. His early campaigns took place in Macedonia. Between 1904 and 1908, he led irregular volunteer bands in a contested borderland against rival forces. He later served as a major in the independent Cretan regiment. During the First Balkan War, that volunteer formation joined operations in the northern theatre under his command. He returned to northern Epirus in 1914.

His career then moved into formal command, including leadership of the military academy in Athens from 1921. By 1927, he held lieutenant general rank. In the early 1930s, he entered politics, won parliamentary elections, and briefly governed Crete in 1935. The plaque below records local men who fought with him. Several names carry marks for those killed in action, connecting distant campaigns with this community. Together, the bust and plaque place a national military biography inside Amoudari’s modest public square. History appears here through a face and names.
