Ruine der Freitreppenanlage des ehemaligen Neuen Lusthauses

In Stuttgart’s Mittlerer Schlossgarten, the Ruine der Freitreppenanlage des ehemaligen Neuen Lusthauses preserves part of a former Renaissance building. The surviving structure includes a western arcade and exterior staircases. Georg Beer designed the Neue Lusthaus for Duke Ludwig as a setting for courtly festivities. The building once stood in the Renaissance Lustgarten. Its high gables, arcades, and ceremonial spaces made the complex a major work of late German Renaissance architecture. The arcade now preserves the site’s architectural scale. The former upper floor opened onto a large banquet hall with a painted barrel ceiling. Water basins and a ribbed vault shaped the building’s earlier interior. The structure later became an opera house and then a royal theatre, changing its original interior. A fire destroyed the remaining Lusthaus. A later relocation placed the western arcade and staircases in the Mittlerer Schlossgarten. Steel and wooden supports preserve the ruin as a cultural monument of special significance. Its surviving masonry links Stuttgart’s palace garden landscape with late Renaissance architecture. The site records the building’s transformation from courtly residence to theatre. Its preserved fragments keep Stuttgart’s architectural history visible.
