Grünanlage Sünderstaffel
Grünanlage Sünderstaffel rises through a small green area at the end of Pfitzerstraße in Stuttgart. The steep staircase connects the street with Diemershaldenstraße, near the Staatsgalerie and Olgaeck. Its two-winged layout gives you a direct view of Stuttgart’s hilly terrain, where public stairways cross slopes shaped by a height difference of about 350 metres.
A round platform interrupts the climb and offers a pause among the trees. When the branches allow, you can glimpse the city centre and the white tower of Stuttgart’s town hall. These Stäffele first helped people cultivate vineyards on steep ground, while the Sünderstaffel now serves as a demanding route through the city.
A family called Sünder may once have grown vines here, while a supposed gallows belongs to local folklore. The staircase has also appeared in Stuttgart crime novels, adding a literary detail to the ascent.
