Église Sainte-Bernadette

In France, Église Sainte-Bernadette presents a modern church in concrete and light. Its sweeping curves and sharp lines replace traditional spires and ornate decoration. Three geometric volumes shape the view from the street: an ellipse, a parallelepiped, and a detached bell tower. The façade remains recessed, discreet, and inviting from the street.

Designed by Swiss architect Pierre Dumas, the church gave a growing neighbourhood a nearby spiritual home. Construction began in 1964 and finished in 1965. Pierre Dumas followed a family connection: his father, Fernand Dumas, shaped modern church architecture. The parish sought a place within walking distance for local residents. The curved concrete wall has no windows and seems to gather you inward.

The bell tower stands apart from the main building, yet appears connected from certain viewpoints. That changing relationship joins separation with unity. Since completion, the church has served local life through gathering, reflection, and celebration. Light and shadow cross the concrete, altering how the three forms meet.
