Main Gate and Former Customs House

The Maintor mit ehemaligem Zollhäuschen formed part of the medieval fortifications beside the river. A small former customs house stands beside the gate. The town wall ran almost parallel to the river, linking the area near Frauenkirche with Rumorknechtsturm. The gate connected the fortified settlement with river traffic. Boats brought goods ashore, while officials checked their cargo and collected the required customs duty at the passage. The customs house supported this trade control. The opening therefore organized movement between the riverfront and the settlement, while the wall protected and regulated access. Trade shaped this stretch of stone.

Flood marks remain visible on the gate and record water levels that sometimes rose very high in earlier times. The stone preserves those traces. They show how the river carried goods toward the town while also threatening the settlement with powerful floods. Water shaped the place.
