Here, Sir Stamford Raffles established Singapore’s first botanical and experimental garden. Raffles gathered, cultivated, and tested plants there, linking botanical study with the territory’s early agricultural development. Para rubber became one notable success of those experiments.
The original garden no longer survives at Fort Canning. Singapore Botanic Gardens carries its legacy from a new site established in 1859. The later garden grew into a tropical botanical institute and advanced orchid breeding and hybridisation. It remains a green space for residents and visitors, connecting Singapore’s early plant experiments with its garden city identity.
