Malay Heritage Centre
Malay Heritage Centre stands in Singapore’s historic Kampong Glam area, inside the restored Istana Kampong Gelam palace. Palladian elements meet indigenous Malay motifs across an architectural setting shaped by Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and George Drumgoole Coleman.
Exhibits, interactive displays, artefacts, multimedia presentations, and dioramas explore Malay Singaporean history and identity. Cultural programmes and workshops connect that heritage with Singapore’s wider multicultural story. The palace originated in 1819, was reconstructed between 1836 and 1843, and became a national monument during SG50 celebrations. The centre has ceased operations for comprehensive redevelopment, while the palace’s history remains anchored in its 23-hectare estate.
