Another Day (The Coolies)
In Singapore, Another Day (The Coolies) is a bronze sculpture by Chong Fah Cheong, created in 2000. Measuring 150 by 160 by 130 centimetres, it brings two workers into a close, everyday scene.
Two lean, muscular men share a simple meal beside a wooden bench and table. One squats on his seat, while the other draws a leg to his chest and lifts a bowl to his lips.
The sculpture recalls manual workers who laboured in Singapore during the 1970s and 1980s. They worked in warehouses and on bumboats along the Singapore River before redevelopment transformed the area. Chong first created the work for the Singapore Tourism Board pavilion at Expo 2000 in Frankfurt. It later appeared at the Esplanade, the Singapore Art Museum and the National Library. The bowl held near the worker’s lips keeps this history grounded in one quiet meal.
