Friedrich Franz II
Friedrich Franz II stands in the Schwerin Palace Gardens as a historic equestrian monument to Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s Grand Duke. Ludwig Brunow created the neobaroque statue, unveiled in 1893, with the rider and horse raised above the gardens.
A marble base more than four metres high supports the sculpture and four allegorical virtues: strength, righteousness, wisdom, and faith. Two commemorative plaques show the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke’s entry into Schwerin in 1871. Public donations financed the work, while Roman imperial statues and Berlin’s Friedrich the Great influenced its military character.
The monument survived wartime melting plans and the post-war removal of royal monuments. Wheelchair access makes this Schwerin historical landmark easier to visit, while the marble figures and plaques reward a close look.
