Spital zum Heiligen Geist stands in Germany as a complex shaped by more than seven centuries of care. Timber framing, later masonry, a former chapel, and modern care facilities gather around a planted courtyard. Together, these buildings show how one place can preserve several eras of architecture.
The foundation began in 1269 to support older people, the sick, and those in need. Civic administration took over the hospital in 1364. A five-storey hospital building opened in 1954, marking another major change in the complex. Its hospital function ended in 1984, while care for older and dependent people continued.
Today, a care home, assisted living, a library, a theatre, a café, and public services share the buildings. The former office building from 1434 keeps its medieval inner structure visible. Bronze figures by Maria Kloss turn the courtyard into a paradise garden. At the southern exit, the Court of Angels displays studies donated by Friedrich Hechelmann.
