Torre della Ciapella
Torre della Ciapella stands in Sanremo, beside Piazza Eroi Sanremesi and behind the city market. This sturdy defensive tower dates from around 1550, with thick walls and a plain military design.
Its position protected La Pigna, Sanremo’s old quarter, from pirate raids along the Ligurian coast. Guards watched the sea and surrounding area from this bastion, ready to warn residents when danger approached. Today, a fence keeps visitors outside, but the exterior remains visible near the end of Salita San Bernardo, shortly before Piazza San Siro.
The tower stands about 100 metres from San Siro Cathedral, along a route through Sanremo’s oldest streets. Its compact, unadorned form still shows how practical sixteenth-century coastal defence could be.
