Werksteingebäude

The Werksteingebäude belongs to the historic ensemble of Shaft Amelung I in Von der Heydt, northern Burbach, Saarbrücken. It preserves a visible fragment of Saarbrücken’s former coal-mining landscape.

The surrounding ensemble includes sandstone walls, sleeping houses, officials’ residences, and a hoisting-machine house. Those structures record the industrial character of the former Von der Heydt mine. Mining in the upper Burbach Valley developed from tunnel workings into deep extraction, shaping the surrounding architectural ensemble. The mine closed, while several surface buildings remained.

The first sleeping house has two storeys, a central risalit, and a triangular gable above its sandstone façade. Another sleeping house, called De Kirch, has large round-arched windows and a central turret. Nearby buildings include a former school and a director’s residence set within a park. Preserved ruins at Von der Heydt include walls and part of a round arch. The ensemble also contains the former Albert Chapel, established after the sleeping-house period and later deconsecrated. The Werksteingebäude stands within a protected industrial monument landscape.
