Forte Batteria Treporti

Forte Batteria Treporti, also known as Forte Vecchio, stands in Punta Sabbioni, within Cavallino-Treporti, on the northern Venetian lagoon. Construction ran from 1845 to 1851 under Austrian rule. Its military purpose was to protect a water route leading towards Venice, at the edge of a narrow coastal strip. The fort has two levels, a gun battery and an artificial moat. Red brick and white Istrian stone define the lunette-shaped structure, whose moat remains connected to lagoon waters. A large inner courtyard occupies the centre.

Later additions included a powder magazine, brick telemetric towers with iron finishes, and two warehouses with wooden-beam roofs. The complex covers more than 26,000 square metres. About 3,800 square metres are built, while open spaces cover 10,400 and the moat occupies 12,400. After military use ended, the fort became a refuge before entering the Via dei Forti museum route and cultural life. The association began its work in 1996. Forte Batteria Treporti is regarded as one of the best-preserved lagoon fortifications and is usually viewed from outside.
