Varri i Presidentit Ibrahim Rugova is a quiet memorial in Velania, Pristina, marking the final resting place of Kosova’s first president. The site offers a place to reflect on a scholar and politician who shaped the country’s peaceful resistance.
Rugova co-founded the Democratic League of Kosova and promoted non-violent methods during the late 1980s. Under his leadership, the party organised a referendum on independence from Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. During the conflict, he met Pope John Paul II, Jacques Chirac, Bill Clinton and European Union representatives while seeking international support for a peaceful solution. The European Parliament awarded him the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1998.
A lasting detail connects his presidency with national identity: in 2001, he proposed a blue Dardania flag bearing a black double-headed eagle as an official presidential symbol.
