Biblioteka Kombëtare e Kosovës Pjetër Bogdani

The Biblioteka Kombëtare e Kosovës Pjetër Bogdani stands in Prishtina as a distinctive work of modern architecture. Its silver-coloured aluminium mesh surrounds the entire building. Domed skylights echo the plis, the traditional white Albanian felt cap, across the roof. The design creates debate about identity and architectural expression. Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković designed the building, which combines Byzantine, Ottoman, and brutalist elements. Marble mosaics by local artist Simon Shiroka decorate the entrance hall. The library contains reading rooms, an amphitheatre, a catalogue hall, and special collections. Its archive stores many volumes in underground levels inaccessible to the public. The writer Pjetër Bogdani gives the library its name. He was an Albanian bishop and writer who supported education and cultural self-determination. During the Kosovo War, Yugoslav forces occupied the library and used it as a command centre. The looting and destruction damaged the library’s collections. The building endured, and recovery work helped preserve its collections and cultural purpose.
