Schloss Charlottenhof
Schloss Charlottenhof stands in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, where neoclassical architecture meets a designed English landscape. Karl Friedrich Schinkel shaped the palace as a Roman villa. Crown Prince Frederick William used Schloss Charlottenhof as a summer residence with Elisabeth Ludovika. The palace interior retains much of its original character and furniture. The tent room draws attention with blue and white striped wallpaper inspired by a Roman Caesar’s tent. Alexander von Humboldt stayed there during summer months.
Peter Joseph Lenné transformed the flat, marshy ground into an English garden linking Charlottenhof with Sanssouci Park. Trees, lawns and water features shape the surrounding park. The palace’s blue and white interiors reflect Crown Princess Elisabeth’s Bavarian heritage throughout the rooms. The name recalls a former owner, Maria Charlotte von Gentzkow. The palace and park together form part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. Charlottenhof connects Sanssouci Park with Potsdam’s historic landscape.
