Grünes Haus
Grünes Haus stands in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten beside the northern shore of Heiliger See. The building belongs to the group called the Bunte Häuser. Heinrich Friedrich Kambly lived and worked there as a court and cabinet sculptor before Peter Joseph Lenné occupied it. Lenné made the house his first official residence. The building also hosted Siegmund Friedrich Hermbstädter’s laboratory, where specialised ovens produced Lebensluft from pyrolusite and saltpetre. Balloons carried that air to the nearby Marmorpalais for King Friedrich Wilhelm II. The experiment aimed to help the king with respiratory problems, but relief lasted only temporarily. The Grünes Haus is a residential building. Its setting combines historic architecture with the Neuer Garten, the Heiliger See, and Potsdam’s cultural heritage. The surrounding area forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Heiliger See has a designated sunbathing lawn and a popular swimming spot. The lake is known for clean water. Swimming and sunbathing are confined to designated areas because the rest of the park has separate management.
