Ambos Mundos - Zwei Welten
Ambos Mundos - Zwei Welten is a Potsdam sculpture by Jörg Plickat, made from Corten steel in 1999. It rises 550 centimetres high, spans 400 centimetres, and reaches 250 centimetres deep.
Two steel beams twist around each other, creating an abstract figure whose structure sets contrasting directions against one another. One steel beam points straight towards the sky. The second beam curves around the stronger supporting member, bringing flexibility to the sculpture’s arrangement of right and obtuse angles. Together, the beams form a relationship of support and balance.
Corten steel gives the work a warm, earthy appearance as its surface develops a protective rust layer over time. That changing surface joins the sculpture’s contrasting forms. The artwork presents two interacting worlds through beams, angles, material, and a shifting sense of structural support. At first, its meaning may seem unclear. Following the lines reveals how the two elements meet, wrap, and depend on one another. The steel structure is located in Potsdam.
