Palacete de Santa Catarina

Palacete de Santa Catarina began as an eighteenth-century income property with several floors intended for rent. Count Verride later acquired the building and transformed it into a palace. He introduced a grand curved staircase in the central courtyard, following a Parisian design. The first level became a noble floor. Stucco, carved wood, azulejo tiles, and inlaid furniture created an eclectic interior with Portuguese and European influences. The palace later became the Verride Palácio de Santa Catarina hotel. Architect Teresa Nunes da Ponte led its rehabilitation for hospitality use while preserving the original structure and materials. Restored rooms retain decorative ceilings, wooden floors, and tile panels.

Minimal contemporary elements sharpen the contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design throughout the connected spaces. The curved staircase retains its place as the building’s prominent feature. The palace stands near a viewpoint associated with the figure of Adamastor, amid gardens and historic streets. Its layered history spans rental housing, aristocratic residence, and hotel use within the city’s built heritage.
