Paço Episcopal do Porto stands beside Porto Cathedral on a rocky elevation, combining religious history with late-Baroque architecture. Its history reaches back to Bishop D. Hugo. Later bishops reshaped the complex, while Frei João Rafael de Mendonça gave it its late-Baroque scale and decoration. The palace still shows several periods. A late Romanesque window near the main entrance contrasts with the grand neoclassical staircase, mural paintings, garlands and carved granite flowers. The museum route includes audience rooms and portraits of Porto’s bishops. Artists Henrique Medina and Júlio Resende created several displayed portraits. One room recreates the dining room of the Viscounts of São João da Pesqueira. Its Manueline silverware follows a design by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and craftsmanship by Reis & Filhos.
