Oratório da Capela de São Sebastião

The Oratório da Capela de São Sebastião is a small religious building in Porto, built in the late eighteenth century and linked to the Convento dos Grilos. Its stone façade carries a full-arched portal. Above the entrance, a curved interrupted pediment displays the convent’s coat of arms, connecting this street monument with its religious institution. The structure retains clear late Baroque features. The oratory belonged to the Passos, small chapels placed along Porto streets for the Senhor dos Passos procession during Lent. Each stop marked a moment of Christ’s Passion. The route began near Sé Cathedral and crossed the oldest part of the city, bringing devotional practice into everyday streets. Portugal’s religious orders were formally extinguished in 1834. After that change, the processions stopped and many Passos disappeared, leaving this oratory as a surviving trace of Porto’s religious landscape. The Convento dos Grilos survives as the Igreja dos Grilos. Its modest scale contrasts with larger religious structures nearby, while its portal, pediment, and coat of arms preserve the memory of processions through Porto.
