Capela do Sagrado Coração

Capela do Sagrado Coração stands in Porto’s Boavista area, beside the former Colégio de Nossa Senhora da Boavista. The school occupied a residence once associated with the Almeida Garrett family. Cristina de Almeida Garrett ordered the chapel’s construction, and its building permit dates from the nineteenth century. A simple façade and modest scale reflect its role as a place of devotion rather than a monumental church.

The chapel and adjoining house later passed to the Companhia de Jesus, which used them for worship and education. Jesuit activity connected the site with schools, religious life, and the Sacred Heart devotion. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the Calmon case brought public conflict involving José Calmon, Rosa Calmon, and the Sisters of Saint Dorothea. Demonstrations and vandalism reached Jesuit properties on Rua da Boavista, placing this small chapel within Porto’s wider struggle between religious and secular forces.
