Batalha Centro de Cinema

The Batalha Centro de Cinema is a cultural institution in Porto dedicated to film exhibition, research, and public discussion.

Its building dates from 1947, during Portugal’s dictatorship, and closed in 2001 after several unsuccessful rebuilding attempts.

The cinema reopened in 2022 after renovation by two local architects, returning the building to cultural use.

The work restored its original character while adapting spaces for film and cultural programming.

Its programme brings together retrospectives, thematic cycles, special screenings, and presentations of contemporary film practices.

Its sections include archive discoveries, national selections, cineclub matinees, and new collectives.

The institution also connects cinema with exhibitions, performances, artistic residencies, and other creative disciplines.

A library and film archive support research, documentation, and wider knowledge of cinema.

Educational projects include screenings and guided visits for schools, while family sessions extend its audiences.

The exhibition Sobrevoo linked films about pigeons and amateur radio with community life in Porto.

The institution supports editorial, training, and debate projects about cinema and its role in society.

Its visual identity uses modernist typography designed by Porto studio Macedo Cannatà.

The Batalha Centro de Cinema brings together film professionals, students, artists, and audiences through varied cultural activities.
