Staustufe Schlüsselburg
Staustufe Schlüsselburg stands on the Weser in Petershagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, combining a dam with a run-of-river hydroelectric station. Two 40-metre sections span the river and help keep its water level steady for navigation. The surrounding 268-hectare reserve brings wetlands, waterways, and open habitats into the same landscape.
The weir was completed in 1956, and the power station has operated there since that year. Statkraft now owns the station, which PreussenElektra originally managed. Ramsar recognition marks the reserve as a wetland of international importance, while conservation status protects its habitats. Waterfowl and waders use the wetlands, while fish inhabit the adjacent canal and varied plants cover the surrounding ground.
Birdwatching reveals the landscape’s strongest character, where large vessels pass through regulated water. Scenic views connect industrial concrete with protected wetland life. The clearest detail remains the contrast between moving water, broad river structures, and wildlife habitats.
