The Mahnmal für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus stands beside Passau’s Inn promenade as a place of historical remembrance. It commemorates victims of the National Socialist regime.
Rusty steel pillars rise into a lattice tower between two weeping willow trees. Their pointed ends give the structure a stark outline.
A knee-high granite cube stands nearby, with inscriptions across its top, front and back surfaces. Granite slabs connect the cube with the tower and continue down steps toward the Inn.
The inscriptions remember people persecuted and murdered under Nazi rule, especially Passau’s Jewish citizens. They describe the loss of rights, property and life in concentration camps.
Austrian sculptor Wolfgang Kirchmayr designed the memorial after Passau had discussed such a place for decades. The city’s earlier plans remained unrealised before this site took shape.
The steel tower and granite block create two connected points for reflection along the river. The memorial is wheelchair accessible.
