Santa Fe

Santa Fe stands in La Calatrava, one of Palma’s oldest districts, as a church shaped by medieval religious change. Its history reaches back to the early fourteenth century, when a synagogue stood here in the Jewish quarter called Call Major. In 1315, the synagogue became a Christian church, following major changes within Palma’s Jewish community. The building reflects religious architecture from the colonial period and occupies the site associated with today’s Iglesia de Montesión.

From 1420, the chapel became closely linked to Palma’s guild of bleachers and tanners. This powerful medieval guild held important events here and maintained its headquarters beside the chapel. Its influence lasted until the late sixteenth century, connecting the building with work, worship and community life. At the entrance, a late Gothic façade carries engraved rampant lions, the guild’s emblem. Those lions preserve a visible trace of the trades and associations that once shaped this corner of Palma.
