Mura delle Cattive
Mura delle Cattive is a seaside promenade in Palermo, built above sixteenth-century defensive walls. One side opens towards the Gulf of Palermo, while the other overlooks private terraces belonging to palaces such as Butera, Piraino and Benso. Stone carvings, symbols and Art Nouveau details trace the city’s layered architectural history.
During the nineteenth century, noble widows used this elevated walkway for quiet strolls away from the busier Foro Italico. Their presence gave the walls their distinctive association with mourning, privacy and sea air, while the surrounding Kalsa connected them to churches, museums and historic buildings. From the path, you can also see Piazza Santo Spirito and Palermo’s wider cityscape.
Uneven stonework runs beneath views that combine old fortifications, noble terraces and open water. Nearby landmarks include Porta Felice and Palazzo Butera, adding more historic detail to the walk through Kalsa.
