Grønland kirke

Grønland kirke stands in Oslo as a neo-Romanesque church with red brick and high stone vaults. Architect Wilhelm von Hanno gives the church its monumental tower and round arches. The church forms part of a planned Grønland ensemble that includes a school, fire station, and former police station. Its white interior keeps the decoration deliberately restrained.

Behind the altar, a semicircular apse holds stained glass showing Jesus with the four evangelists. Steel bells hang within the church’s tall tower. Stone vaults and the aisled layout shape a resonant space for choirs, concerts, and musical gatherings. A Petrof grand piano joins the church’s organs. The historic Walcker organ dates from the nineteenth century, while a choir organ serves the church’s musical programme. The church hosts services, concerts, and neighbourhood events.

As a registered heritage site, Grønland kirke remains the main church for the Gamlebyen and Grønland parish. Its red-brick architecture remains a landmark across Oslo’s eastern districts.
