Denkmal der mutigen Frauen in der NS Zeit stands beside Ochsenfurt’s lower gate fortification, where medieval walls and towers still frame the town. The memorial artwork recalls women who acted there on 29 March 1945, as American troops advanced from the southwest.
National Socialist authorities had ordered barricades at the city entrances, but the women recognized the danger to Ochsenfurt and its residents. They marched to the local party leader, demanded an unopposed surrender, then removed the barriers with their children. Ropes pulled the deeply buried beams from the ground, while a human chain carried the securing stones towards the river. Despite threats from Volkssturm members, they cleared the route before American tanks arrived. Thomas Reuter created the memorial in 2007 from corten steel and shell limestone.
An opening cuts through the upright steel plate like a gate, while forged-steel scenes show women dismantling barricades on one side and approaching American cannons on the other.
