Schwal
Schwal is a historic spot in Neu-Ulm, set on an island where the Little and Grand Danube meet. The island belongs to Bavaria and lies between Ulm and Neu-Ulm. German emigrants once gathered here before boarding Ulmer Schachteln, river boats that carried them downstream towards Vienna and southeastern Europe. Local boatbuilders constructed these vessels on the western Danube shore. The island served shipping and rafting before becoming a public place and memorial site, linking river travel with local memory. Sculptor Edwin Scharff created the war memorial here. Its inscription refers to Luke, chapter two, verse twenty-nine, while the memorial honours victims of war and oppressive regimes. Schwal also frames Ulm across the river. The island offers sunset views towards Ulm, while the surrounding area supports walking and quiet reflection. Local festivals bring lively activity to the island. Schwörwochenfest is one named celebration associated with Schwal, adding a festival setting to its historical and memorial character.
