Wallfahrtskirche Heilig Kreuz
Wallfahrtskirche Heilig Kreuz stands above the main street in Mindelzell, Bavaria, tucked slightly out of view. This Baroque pilgrimage church combines religious history with ornate architecture and a quiet setting.
Johann Kaspar Radmiller from Thannhausen designed and built the church between 1749 and 1750. Franz Martin Kuen filled the interior with frescoes, adding painted detail to its architectural form. A relic of the True Cross connects the sanctuary with pilgrimage traditions reaching back to the early thirteenth century. Emperor Frederick II acquired the relic in Jerusalem in 1229 and gave it to the surrounding area.
Inside, elaborate craftsmanship and ceiling paintings make the church a destination for art, history, and architecture. Above Mindelzell’s main street, the concealed approach gives this richly decorated sanctuary a distinctly peaceful character.
