Teatro dei Filodrammatici
In Milan, Teatro dei Filodrammatici is a historic theatre whose story reaches back to the late eighteenth century. Its above-ground architecture preserves a distinctly Milanese character. Luigi Canonica first conceived the theatre using designs by Giuseppe Piermarini and Leopoldo Pollak.
In 1904, Laveni and Avati remodelled the building in the elegant Liberty style. Bombing during the Second World War left only its perimeter walls standing. During the 1960s, Luigi Caccia Dominioni revitalised the space as a distinctive underground theatre. His intervention retained the traditional Milanese architecture above ground.
Francesco Somaini’s mosaics bring patterned colour into the interior. Contemporary performances connect the venue with societal themes and current events. You can therefore see architectural layers from Napoleonic Milan through wartime destruction and modern theatre.
