Civico museo archeologico di Milano

The Civico Museo Archeologico di Milano presents Milan’s ancient history from its setting on Corso Magenta. The entrance cloister frames the museum’s archaeological collection.

Inside, the Masso di Borno introduces prehistoric material, while Roman objects trace history through several periods. Named Roman sarcophagi anchor the museum galleries.

The atrium and ground floor bring together Celtic finds, gravestones, a frescoed altar, and vessels. The Diàtreta Trivulzio stands among the nearby vessels.

Sculptures, Hercules figures, and the Athlete’s grave extend the display into ancient social and artistic worlds. An inner cloister holds carved plaques and Roman gravestones.

Below, vaults contain glassware, mosaics, and a bust of Alexander Severus from the Roman world. Cesarea Marittima connects Milan with an archaeological site in Israel.

Other galleries present classical, barbarian, Etruscan, Byzantine, and medieval material alongside Apulian vases. The Gandhara wing displays Buddhist sculptures from ancient Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The museum also explores gender roles in ancient Greece and the transition from late Roman to early medieval society.
