Plataforma Norte

Plataforma Norte forms a prominent section of Monte Albán, the ancient Zapotec city in present-day Mexico. Plataforma Norte includes stone platforms, plazas, pyramids, altars, and religious shrines.

Monte Albán occupies a hill and became a major political, economic, and religious centre for the Zapotec people. Its architecture uses stepped platforms and carefully arranged open spaces.

The Patio Hundido, or sunken patio, creates a distinctive open-air space within this ceremonial landscape. The patio likely hosted gatherings, rituals, or communal activities.

Archaeological remains include sculptures and carvings showing gods, rulers, and mythological scenes. Nearby traces of homes indicate that people lived and worked beside these ceremonial places.

Building orientations often corresponded with astronomical events and reflected Zapotec cosmological beliefs. The ruins reveal connections between urban planning, religious practice, social life, and daily work.

Visitors can see stone foundations and reconstructed elements that convey the ancient city’s scale and layout. Those remains support study of Zapotec architecture, religion, politics, and community life.
