Landesfürstliche Burg - Castello Principesco

The Landesfürstliche Burg, also called Castello Principesco, stands at the foot of the Küchelberg in Meran.

This well-preserved residence belongs to the city of Meran.

The building began as a city residence for Archduke Sigismund of Austria and later housed Tyrolean administration.

Historical rulers used these rooms.

The museum presents late medieval life through chambers, parlours and the so-called maidens’ rooms.

Original tiled stoves and restored frescoes remain visible inside.

Musical instruments and weapons add everyday, ceremonial and defensive objects to the historic interiors.

Friedrich von Schmidt guided the restoration.

The building’s preserved structure shows how a noble residence changed into an administrative centre, museum and registry office.

Meran still uses the castle for civil weddings.

Its rooms connect regional architecture with objects that reveal how people lived within thick medieval walls.
