Gaul in der Wiege is a house painting in Memmingen, showing a horse resting inside a cradle. That striking image belongs to a local legend.
According to the story, people buried a woman with valuable jewellery after mistaking deep sleep for death. A gravedigger opened her coffin, hoping to take the jewellery. The woman awoke, frightened him away, and returned home to her astonished husband.
Her husband initially doubted that she was truly his wife. He described her return as unlikely as their horse lying in a cradle. The family then found the horse inside the cradle.
The painting commemorates this extraordinary return and connects a domestic house with Memmingen’s storytelling tradition. Local tradition says neglecting the painting would bring the woman’s spirit back to haunt the house. Gaul in der Wiege therefore presents a curious image, a household tale, and a warning together.
