Neues Rathaus
Neues Rathaus stands in Magdeburg as a wheelchair-accessible Wilhelminian building with detailed architectural features. Construction ran from 1905 to 1907.
Growing administrative demands led the city to build it after the old city hall became too small. The municipal savings bank, city library, and city archive originally occupied its rooms. Air raids on 28 September 1944 and 16 January 1945 heavily damaged and burned the building. Reconstruction after 1950 restored much of its historical form.
Municipal administration and the public order office now use the building alongside the old city hall. Excavations uncovered remnants of a city wall believed to predate the ninth century. A statue of Magdeburg inventor Otto von Guericke stands among its most distinctive details.
