Serbisch-orthodoxe Kirche Linz

The Serbisch-orthodoxe Kirche Linz, also called the Church of St. Vasilije Ostroški or Hafenkirche, stands in Linz. It serves as an Orthodox church dedicated to St. Vasilije Ostroški.

Hans Feichtlbauer designed the building, which opened in 1935 as the Catholic parish church of St. Severin. Its single nave, transept, chancel tower, and arched porch define its architecture.

The church originally served Lustenau, when the surrounding area still had a rural and small-town character. Linz later developed its harbor, industrial zone, and nearby residential districts.

After the Catholic community moved to a new Severin church, the Hafenkirche remained a branch church for several decades. The Serbian Orthodox community leased the building in 1990 and later transformed its interior for Orthodox worship.

Frescoes cover the altar area, walls, and ceiling with scenes from Christ’s life. A large fresco of St. Severin preserves a visible connection with the church’s Catholic beginnings.

The church serves Serbian Orthodox communities in Linz and welcomes wider Orthodox cultural traditions. Its community includes people from the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Georgia.

Liturgies, shared celebrations, traditional food, folk dancing, and choral singing have shaped its community life. The building is also protected as a historic monument in Linz.
