Grundstein für das Brucknerhaus stands in Linz as the foundation stone of a concert hall central to the city’s musical life. Nearby, the modern building presents a 130-metre glass front, seven floors and a concert hall celebrated for its acoustics.
The stone was laid on 16 May 1969, after plans for a major Linz venue had gathered momentum following the Second World War. Finnish architects Kaija and Heikki Sirén designed the building, which opened in 1974 with Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. Since then, Brucknerfest, Linzer Klangwolke, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and international ensembles have brought tradition and new music together here. A new organ arrived in 2018, while the original façade remained intact.
One detail connects the foundation ceremony with the present: a time capsule containing contemporary objects remains sealed inside one of the building’s pillars.
