Evangelische Versöhnungskirche Dornach

Evangelische Versöhnungskirche Dornach stands in Linz’s Dornach-Auhof district as an Evangelical-Lutheran church beside its community centre. Roland Rainer designed both buildings, which rose between 1996 and 1997 as his final completed church. Two asymmetrical wings show light-red brickwork beneath flat roofs, while a glass-and-steel corridor joins them. A covered walkway leads through a green area towards the entrance, with a garden visible from the church.

Inside, steel beams support the flat ceiling, and the north wall carries the altar area across its full width. A delicate glass-and-steel tower sends daylight down a shaft to the altar. Recycled bricks from older buildings stand alongside concrete and wood, giving the simple interior a clear material character. Jindřich Vydra added an ornamental mosaic in 1998, bringing colour to the restrained space. Flexible steps allow the room to change for worship, community gatherings and musical performances.

Raimar Galter’s organ stands on the right, with one manual and nine stops for services and concerts. Good acoustics support performances, while the community centre hosts activities beyond religious use. Since 2009, the complex has stood under monument protection in recognition of its architectural and cultural significance. The small garden, visible beyond the altar space and brick façades, leaves the strongest impression of calm.
