Atelierhaus Salzamt

Atelierhaus Salzamt stands in Linz, Austria, inside a Baroque building shaped by the city’s history. Cross-vaulted ceilings, original stucco and wooden floorboards remain inside.

Built in 1706, the building served as an imperial authority regulating Austria’s salt trade. Its outer walls rise from former city fortifications and reach two metres in thickness. A renovation before Linz became European Capital of Culture in 2009 preserved these features while adding basement services for living and working. Today, studios and apartments support artists from Linz, Upper Austria and other countries through residencies and creative exchange.

Ground-floor spaces bring that work into public view through exhibitions, lectures, discussions, presentations and screenings. Artists have explored contemporary art, club culture, performance and collaborations with universities and cultural organisations. The most striking detail may be the contrast between the robust walls and the changing artwork created within them.
