St. Johann Baptist
St. Johann Baptist stands in Pitzling, a district of Landsberg am Lech, with architectural features reaching back to the thirteenth century. Its medieval fabric still shapes the church.
Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the church served as a burial place for noble families from nearby Schloss Pöring. Several grave plaques remain inside and outside. The high altar, made by Franz Xaver Schmutzer, arrived in 1803 from the dissolved Wessobrunn Abbey during secularisation. Lorenz Luidl’s sculptures add another artistic focus, including the Ölberg group at the entrance and further figures inside.
A people’s altar designed by Professor Franz Bernhard Weißhaar was consecrated in 2001. The church remains an active place of worship within the parish community of Mariä Himmelfahrt. Ancient stone plaques, a Wessobrunn altar, and Luidl’s carved figures bring medieval origins, noble burials, and Bavarian religious art together in one interior.
