Bäckertor
Bäckertor is a medieval city gate in Landsberg am Lech, built in 1435 as part of the town’s medieval fortifications. Its walls once regulated movement through a key entrance into the old town’s defensive wall ring.
The gate stands beside Mühlbach, a fast-flowing stream connected with the Lechwehr and the town’s medieval mills. Water powered mills and sawmills, while workshops and commercial buildings grew around this working urban channel. A later residential complex now incorporates the historic structure on foundations of the second wall ring, dating from 1364. Four townhouses and three penthouses occupy the former carpentry-workshop site.
Stream-facing terraces appear to float above the water, with tall folding shutters and three-storey window elements. Inside, galleries, integrated lighting and bold colours connect contemporary homes with the site’s historic character. Bridges across the stream bring residents and passers-by into the same lively setting.
