Konzertgarten West
Konzertgarten West is an open-air theatre and cultural space in Germany, arranged around a round forecourt, tiered seating and a low stage. An eight-sided pavilion with a reed roof rises beside the plaza, while the northern covered promenade opens views towards the sea.
Built in 1910, the pavilion now houses the public library. A clinker-brick fountain stands at the forecourt’s centre, crowned by Günter Brock’s bronze figure, “Die Lauschende”. Restoration from 2006 to 2008 recovered the appearance of 1928, removed intrusive additions and retained useful changes from the 1960s. Coastal pines frame the grounds, and lindens planted around 1925 remain a defining feature.
Fragrant shrub roses, lavender and climbing plants shape the planting, while a preserved dune carries beach grass, lilac, dwarf purple willow and dune roses. Concerts, children’s events and markets animate the garden, which also offers a wind-sheltered place to sit and look towards the water.
