Friedhofskapelle St. Georg
The Friedhofskapelle St. Georg is a Catholic cemetery chapel in Niederraunau, a district of Krumbach. It stands at the village’s southern edge.
The outer cemetery lies east of a steep slope descending towards the Kammel River. The chapel has received several extensions.
Its oldest section includes the polygonal choir and one window bay of the main room, dating from around 1500. Joseph Franz Eustach von Freyberg directed a later enlargement.
About two centuries later, builders extended the main room by one window bay under his direction. The chapel gained its roof turret in 1908.
A later mortuary resembles a porch, while the chapel’s furnishings mainly follow Neo-Rococo design. Its altar painting shows the Adoration of the Shepherds.
The painting dates from around 1630. The wooden sculpture of Saint George, made around 1700, now stands on the sound cover of Niederraunau parish church.
A memorial for Michael Schleifer marks the exterior of the choir apex. Michael Schleifer was a commercial councillor and honorary citizen of former Niederraunau.
He lived from 1847 to 1915. The chapel brings together cemetery architecture, later additions and historic devotional artworks.
