Bust of Hippocrates

The Bust of Hippocrates stands in Kos, a Greek island closely associated with medicine and classical culture. This sculpture portrays Hippocrates of Kos, the physician and philosopher who lived around 460 to 370 BCE, often known as the “father of medicine.” His thoughtful expression presents an image of a wise, experienced doctor.

Hippocrates promoted prognosis, clinical observation, and systematic disease classification, while the Hippocratic School helped separate medicine from philosophy and religious practice. The Hippocratic Corpus gathered medical knowledge and practical advice, and the Hippocratic Oath remains linked to medical ethics, including patient privacy and care. A local story says he taught students beneath a plane tree on Kos about 2,500 years ago, remembered in references to the Hippocratic Tree.

The sculpture is sometimes placed on a marble column or pedestal, with facial features, hair, and beard shaped in the style of ancient Greek portraiture. Bronze, marble, and modern 3D-printed plastic can all appear in versions of this subject.
