Cattedrale di Santa Maria
Cattedrale di Santa Maria stands in Jesolo, the ancient Equilio, within the Venetian lagoon. The ruined cathedral once served as the seat of the Diocese of Equilio and ranked among the lagoon’s most significant churches, after Basilica di San Marco.
Archaeological remains indicate a Latin cross floor plan, while excavations have uncovered a large cemetery surrounding the church. Nearby, Basilica di San Mauro formed part of an early medieval monastery with three apses, later abandoned in the twelfth century because of difficult environmental conditions. Work by Ca’ Foscari University in 2018 revealed the monastery’s bell tower and another cemetery area.
The site brings together worship, burial and monastic life in one medieval landscape. A local legend blames Attila for the cathedral’s destruction, while the surviving stones offer a quieter record of Jesolo’s past.
