Cumhuriyet Çeşmesi
Cumhuriyet Çeşmesi is a small architectural landmark in Istanbul’s Fatih district, within the Yavuz Sultan Selim neighbourhood. Its simple form sits beside the historic Aya Kapı gateway. The setting brings together several reminders of Istanbul’s past, including the Ayakapı Police Station and the Tomb of Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa. Those two sites face the fountain across the street.
Built in the early twentieth century, the fountain carries an inscription dating its construction to 1923. Its restrained design concentrates decoration around the basin. The marble bench has broken, leaving a visible trace of age beside the otherwise modest structure. Here, a decorated basin, a damaged seat, an old gateway and a tomb share one compact urban scene.
